Blog Post: Are We Only Products of Our Environment?

The question of whether we are products of our environment is deeper than most people realize. In The Other Wes Moore, both Wes Moores grew up in similar circumstances—urban neighborhoods, exposure to violence, and limited resources—yet their lives took very different paths. This shows that while environment plays a major role in shaping who we are, it is not the only factor that determines our outcome.

Environment has a powerful influence on our lives. The people around us, the opportunities we are exposed to, and the situations we experience all shape how we think and how we react. For example, someone raised in a neighborhood where crime is common may begin to see that lifestyle as normal. In the book, the “other” Wes Moore is influenced by negative surroundings, including family members and peers involved in illegal activity. Over time, these influences affected his decisions and led him down a destructive path.

However, the author Wes Moore faced many of the same environmental challenges but ended up on a different path. One major difference was the presence of structure and guidance in his life. His mother pushed him toward discipline and education, even when it was difficult. She made sacrifices to keep him focused and gave him opportunities to avoid the environment pulling him in the wrong direction. Later, mentors and programs, such as military school, helped him develop discipline and accountability.

This shows that it is not only about where you live, but also about who is guiding you within that environment. Two people can grow up in the same place but have completely different experiences depending on their support system and the people influencing their decisions. Guidance can sometimes make the difference between staying stuck and finding a way forward.

Another important factor is personal choice. While environment can strongly influence behavior, individuals still have the ability to decide how they respond to their surroundings. The author Wes Moore had moments where he could have gone down the wrong path, but instead made choices that led him toward structure and success. One major turning point was attending military school, which helped him change his mindset and direction. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore continued making decisions that reinforced the cycle he was already in. This does not mean one person had it easier than the other, but it does show how important decision-making is over time.

A real-life example of this can be seen in many successful people who grew up in difficult environments. Many athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists come from challenging backgrounds but use their experiences as motivation rather than limitation. At the same time, there are others from similar environments who do not break the cycle. This supports the idea that environment influences us, but it does not fully control our outcome.

From my perspective, we are shaped by both our environment and our choices, but neither one fully defines us. Environment sets the starting point, but it does not decide the final destination. Mentors, discipline, mindset, and personal decisions all play a major role in determining how someone’s life turns out. The Other Wes Moore clearly shows how two people with similar beginnings can still end up in completely different places.

In conclusion, we are not only products of our environment. While it has a strong impact on who we become, it is only one piece of a larger picture. What truly defines a person is how they respond to their environment and the choices they make along the way.
